Empowering Girls through Tech: The MS Office Workshop Journey

As one of the facilitators at the recent MS Office workshop, I'm excited to share the amazing journey we had with these incredible girls. In today's digital world, being tech-savvy is no longer a luxury but a necessity. However, not everyone has equal access to learning opportunities, especially young girls who are often underrepresented in the tech industry. Recognizing this gap, Prime IT Club, in collaboration with Voices of Women Media, recently organized a 6-day workshop aimed at empowering 11th-grade girls of Kanya Mandir School with vital MS Office skills.

From the very beginning, our mission was clear: to equip these young girls with the essential MS Office skills necessary to thrive in a technology-driven world. We kicked off our journey with an exploration of Microsoft Word, where participants delved into the world of formatting tools and design elements while crafting beautiful newsletters that reflected their unique voices. It was extremely uplifting to watch their imagination come to life.

As the workshop progressed, we navigated through the intricacies of Excel, learning spreadsheet basics and even venturing into the realm of family budgets. Watching these girls tackle complex calculations with precision and finesse was truly awe-inspiring.

But the journey didn't end there. We then delved into the world of PowerPoint, where the girls polished their presentation skills. We watched as they made creativity run through captivating slideshows describing why they aspired to be like their role models. And let's not forget about the artistic flair of MS Paint, where digital artistry flourished in vibrant colors and imaginative designs.

Each day brought new challenges and new opportunities for growth. The feedback we received from our participants was overwhelmingly positive, echoing sentiments of increased confidence, readiness to embrace technology, and a newfound sense of empowerment.

"I liked the workshop because they provided so much knowledge. They helped us get familiar with MS Office and enhanced our knowledge for the future."

"The workshop improved my knowledge and self-confidence. I expect this workshop will help me in the future."

"Instructors created a friendly environment so that we could learn and gain knowledge."

“When you both have time, please come and meet us”

Reading this feedback from the girls, my co-instructor, Nirjala Shakya, and I shared a  similar sentiment. We knew these six days had been significant, and felt a sense of fulfillment knowing that we had made a positive difference in their lives. Witnessing their growth and newfound confidence over six days was inspiring. This experience reaffirms our commitment to gender equality in tech and leaves us excited for the bright futures these girls will create.

Reflecting on the success of our workshop, one thing is abundantly clear – the journey towards gender equality in the tech industry is well underway. Through education, opportunity, and mentorship, we are paving the way for a future where every aspiring technologist, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

Devin AI :The world's first fully Autonomous AI Software Engineer

Devin AI

The world's first fully Autonomous AI Software Engineer

Introduction

Devin.ai is an impressive generative AI solution that claims to be a new kind of AI engineer designed to perform software engineering tasks autonomously

How does it work?

  • After a task is given it makes a list of tasks to be done .
  • It surfers through the internet to get some API documents.
  • Then it copies, writes the code and runs it.
  • It gets an error, fixes it and runs the loop infinitely until the conditions are met.

How is it similar to a software engineer ?

  • It has access to all the tools that a software developer has such as a browser, terminal, code editor.
  • It can debug programs like a programmer .
  • It can create websites and programs with simple prompts.
  • It has also had some success doing jobs on upwork.

Statistics

It has performed a lot better compared to the other AI tools at solving real world problems, but it has an success rate of only 13% although the number can be increased in the future.

Revolution or hype?

It has many great applications but speaking purely on fact it can’t replace software engineers that easily and still need human intervention so it is more hype than revolution.

“The first AI software engineer” Was it just great marketing?

Any other simple marketing would not have created such chaos but claiming that an AI is a software engineer really made many software engineers themselves talk.

Should you be scared?

It is still to be released publicly so, we are yet to see how it will impact different areas But programmers who have actual intelligence are still better than devin as it can only program based on preexisting  solutions creative problem solving by devin or any other AI is possible .

Why can’t devin AI take your job.

Although the AI seems to do all the things that a person can do it still can’t properly handle complex task and need human intervention

Conclusion

So, the main question is should you still consider software engineering? Yes of course, although the development of such AI will definitely decrease the numbers of jobs and only those who can consistently update themselves and come up with creative solutions while using the said AI will be able to compete in the field.

IT : Estrangement to Women?

Ever since I started my bachelor's as a tech student, the one thing that has kept haunting me is, do I belong here? Do I belong to the group of guys who knew how to open a CPU when they were 8? Am I relatable to a bunch of people who have so much passion for coding? I feel stuck watching the guys all over my classroom sometimes. To see a fellow girl classmate is a price for sour eyes. Oh, they just want to be cool as a tech girl, or all they know is to know by heart the books; the judgmental eyes from neighbors and the can you pass the degree question from the relatives feel normal now. At the workplace, it's so male-dominated. Obviously, they're corporate enough to make you feel included, but do they really? Nobody understands how it is to be the only gender in an entire room. Oh, don't be silly; it sounds great to be the only girl, or it's so cool to earn six figures after graduation, which is all I get if I ever share this feeling with anyone. But that's not the reason I got into tech. I have always been fascinated by computers; my dad bought me one when I was 12, and it has always made me happy. I wanted to break the stereotype that the field of technology is the domain of men. I do not believe there is a field for gender in any way. I am a woman who is technically sound and is happy to pursue a career in the technological field. I believe I am equal to or more than every male coworker at my office and every male student in my class. Currently, as an Associate Software Engineer and a president of Prime IT Club, I feel joy, and I hope I can pass on the message to every girl out there looking down on themselves if they choose the right faculty, watching the group of boys in their class, having imposter syndrome, and not being able to fight back, that if you are having fun and if you want to do it, there has to be absolutely no human being to stop you from doing what you love.

Economics and Technology: A match the world needs to embrace

Economics can be defined as a social science that embraces how individuals, some businesses, governments, and societies utilize their resources to the maximum. Dealing with the basic principles of demand and supply, economics conveys messages about wants and needs. Involving theories about the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services as well as behavioral understandings of the factors involved in such consumptions, economics enhances these theories and helps in economic growth, development, and welfare with help from humanity at large.

On the other hand, technology is a way of creating, developing, and improving different products, services, and systems by creating tools, techniques, and processes. Technology includes the modernization of the world to realize its maximum potential with a drive to efficiently, productively, and functionally change industrial activities to promote their maximum outcome.

With an agenda related to the maximum outcome, economics and technology have become increasingly connected. The advancement of industries using technology has become key to shaping the economic landscape of today's world. In this article, we will explore how economics and technology impact the global economy and what the future holds with its much broader potential.

The digital economy is such an amazing concept that has been led by global-scale companies such as Amazon, Google, and Facebook. These tech giants have not only disrupted traditional retail and advertising but have completely created new methods. Online marketplaces, social media, or e-commerce are prime examples of how consumers are directed towards technology in modern times.

The immense rise of gig companies should not be an afterthought. Freelance work through different technology mediums, the online marketplace has blurred the lines between currencies and made it much easier in terms of creating self-employed workers. This has not only created a rise in remote work but also addressed how opportunities can be given to people in developing countries where access to traditional employment has been limited.

Automation through artificial intelligence (AI) is simply the biggest potential the world has in terms of today's innovations. AI deals with numbers like nothing before it, utilizing data in such amazing proportions that it can only increase productivity and efficiency while embracing the theories of economics that relate to the science of wealth and consumer behavior. These advancements give a general understanding of how manufacturing and resources could be reaching their maximum potential.

Technology's rise has created a massive outburst of challenges for policymakers. With a global reach of tech companies and issues of privacy, intellectual property, and antitrust being such big thought policymakers and grappling very hard to find the right balance between innovation and technology. While some are simply trying to avoid any such massive change as it can be a huge risk to their general economy as well, some are simply fascinated by the massive impact technology can have on the economy. The Nepalese government's constant effort to try and block any movements towards cryptocurrency could explain how big of a challenge it is to regulate such a technical rise in the economy.

Looking to the future, it is clear that technology will have a massive role in shaping the global economy. The development of tech industries and new technologies such as quantum computing and blockchain is likely to have a massive impact on multiple industries. However, certain risks come with the change. Cybersecurity can be a massive threat that could create adversity in the global economy while adding unwanted sanctions with it.

In conclusion, economics and technology are becoming increasingly connected. Technology is transforming traditional industries, creating new ones, and changing the way we work, communicate, and consume. While this has created new opportunities and challenges, it is clear that technology will continue to play a crucial role in shaping the global economy in the years to come. As policymakers and businesses navigate this rapidly changing landscape, it will be essential to strike the right balance between innovation and regulation to ensure that the benefits of technology are shared by all.

Cast your minds back to 4 years ago. Life was so beautiful with all the happiness. Meeting people, shaking hands, emotional hugs and so much more. Fast forward to 2021, and the reality is so much different. A being that our eyes cannot feel is a terrorist plotting a tiger attack on us and all we can do is sit and wait for it to fade away. But we are humans and we never stop fighting. We fought through all odds to come to the age of science and technology and we are fighting against the Virus to get our new normal; Nepal is not an exception. Political issues, Economic and Geographical issues yet we have not stopped our war against COVID-19.

Like many of us, staying idle at home had started taking a toll on me. It was getting increasingly difficult to keep myself motivated and positive. That is when my ward office announced its need for volunteers. Then I got to know that my ward office was in search of volunteers. The risk was high as COVID was spreading like a wildfire and going out and working in the field was much more vulnerable to COVID. And due to this reason, I was sceptical about joining the team. At first, I was not sure if I wanted to do this. Then after thinking for a week or so I finally decided to go and work as a volunteer. But it was not that easy. I realized I had to convince my family members. I thought this was the hardest part of this process. But it turned out to be an easy job. I convinced my family very easily.

Then I finally started to go and work as a volunteer. The first thing I did is go to the ward office to get recruited as a volunteer and start working. I did not get to know other volunteers as I joined a little late and due to that I did not get any orientation or introduction program. Getting into the work I did, the first task assigned to me was packing food supplies. The food supplies had to be given to needy people from our ward. I was so nervous working with the new people, that I messed up the packing many times. Then there were days when I packed so many packages that my hand felt numb. So, after filling the supplies for like one week, we completed packing. Now I got the chance to get my hands on official work. My job now was data collection and verification. Along with that, we also went out supplying relief packages and spreading awareness regarding maintaining physical distance and following the lockdown. Until now, I was getting so much familiar with other volunteers, that I started spending more time in the ward office working rather than at the home. We as volunteers also had to handle COVID-19 patients many times, which was the most stressful time. Getting the patients to quarantine centres, keeping the surroundings safe, and sanitizing the locality were specific jobs that we feared.

In volunteering, the most important thing is the team. I am glad I had a wonderful team. All the members of our team were extremely helpful and fun. Even our team leader, the ward president was chill. He always made working fun. The most fun time during the day was lunchtime. We used to forget all the stress of work, gossiping, and making fun of each other. Along with all the fun, we also had some small internal conflicts. But to our luck, those conflicts did not last too long. We also used to go for a walk around our ward in the name of the awareness program. Concisely, working as a volunteer turned out to be interesting, fun, and stressful in some ways or another.

The other thing I realized while working as a volunteer is that people have many misconceptions about volunteering during COVID-19. Some people were positive and appreciated our work as volunteers. But there was the majority of people had negative thinking toward the volunteers. The thing that I had not expected was many people asking me how much I was paid to volunteer. I used to be very furious when this question came up. Another thing I was asked was if I joined this volunteering work only to roam around and go outside. These things were sometimes demotivating, but I and my team worked together to help others during the pandemic.

Stay Safe and Stay Happy.
